TRADERS and councillors have united in calls to bring a prominent row of empty shops back into use in Somerton town centre.

Retirement Villages Group Ltd is seeking planning permission to build seven houses and seven flats at West Street and refurbish four empty shops in West Street.

This week local figures backed an official's call to ensure the shop refurbishments are not left behind the house building plans.

Eirian Williams, chairman of Somerton Town Council, (pictured) said: "There is nothing worse than seeing empty, disused shops.

"We need busy shops to bring people into the town."
