A NEW Tesco in Sherborne will be a quarter larger than the town's existing Sainsbury's store, according to campaigners who met with bosses from the supermarket giant last week.
Members of the Sherborne Defensive Planning Group (SDPG) say they were told the new store earmarked for the Sherborne Hotel site off the A30 would measure 28,000 sq ft.
They say that would make the new supermarket around 25 per cent larger than the Sainsbury's site already in the town.
Speaking after Thursday's meeting, Peter Neal, chairman of the SDPG, also dismissed the findings of an independent survey conducted on behalf of the company as "Tesco spin".
Sherborne residents will be able to have their say on the plans at a series of public consultations which start next week.
A spokeswoman for Tesco said: "We are hoping to speak to as many people from Sherborne and its surrounding area as possible during our public consultation.
"We have had some positive discussions already and look forward to discussing our proposals with the wider community over the coming weeks."
