GILLINGHAM Town Council has welcomed the festive season with its annual Christmas parade and switching on of the Christmas lights.

The town welcomed Father Christmas on his magical float supplied by the Lions Club on Friday evening while the mayor Val Pothecary with the help of Harry Hurst and Keira Fellmann from Gillingham Primary School switched on the Christmas tree lights.

A spokesman for the council said: "A larger crowd than usual came out and enjoy the parade, led by Gillingham Imperial Silver Band and followed by a large number of young people wearing their fabulous festive hats."

Gillingham Primary School was the winner of the festive hat competition, while Brainwave charity shop won the best dressed window competition.
