THE fascinating history of a parish near Yeovil will be explored at a workshop event this weekend.

The first ever Pendomer Parish and Family History weekend takes place on Saturday and Sunday. It will be held in the Hardington Mandeville Village Hall.

Dr Kate Lack, a professional researcher and author will run a morning workshop called "Who Went Where, When and How".

She will talk about the historical framework which shaped the lives of the residents of the local parishes in the past.

Visitors will also have the chance to receive expert advice on how to research their own family tree.

David Lovelock, head of the committee organising the weekend said: "We have had a very good response from local people and from further afield and we expect to have a range of items and material that will of appeal to anyone with an interest in local history.

"Although we are concentrating on Pendomer we will be including memorabilia from East Coker and Hardington as well because the history of the three villages is quite closely connected.

"This is the first time we have staged this event so we hope it will appeal to anyone interested in this fascinating corner of south Somerset."

The Hardington village street fair will also be held on the Saturday and an exhibition of Pendomer Parish History – which contains a wealth of material and photographs about the parish – will be on display in Hardington Village Hall.

The exhibition will then be moved to Pendomer's St Roch Church where it can be viewed between 11.30am and 4.30pm on the Sunday.

The annual Benefice Open Air Church Service will also take place on Sunday in a field on the road to Pendomer from 10am.

It will be held under cover in the event of bad weather.

Barbecue lunches will be available next to the church from noon and light refreshments will be served all afternoon.

There are still some places available for Saturday's workshop and Mr Lovelock is still accepting Pendomer memorabilia for the display.
