DARYL Jacob has been unveiled as the new jockey of Cue Card, the Western Gazette can exclusively reveal.
The Wincanton rider was the unanimous choice of owner Jean Bishop, Milborne Port handler Colin Tizzard and son Joe Tizzard, who was the stable star’s permanent jockey until his retirement in March.
Irishman Jacob turned freelance this season after parting company with champion NH handler Paul Nicholls.
The 30-year-old said: “It’s an exciting opportunity for me and great to be associated with a horse of his calibre. I feel very privileged to be riding one of the best chasers in training.”
After Cue Card’s season was cut short by a stress fracture diagnosed in late February, handler Tizzard has confirmed he should return to training in August.
Upon announcing Jacob as his new jockey, Tizzard senior said: “Daryl did not become number one jockey with Nicholls for nothing. He is a good professional jockey, is used to riding in the biggest races and dealing with pressure.
“We also wanted someone who would ride not only Cue Card but all of Jean’s horses. Being freelance he can do that – it’s an ideal appointment.”
Bishop’s husband Bob added: “Many top jockeys would love to ride Cue Card but couldn’t commit to riding our other five horses, whereas Daryl could.”
